Officers responded to a missing person report filed by Linda Cahill regarding her son, Ethan Cahill, 24, who had not returned home or made contact in approximately 48 hours. Cahill described her son as reliable and stated he routinely checks in daily, making his silence out of character. She provided a vehicle description and stated his phone appeared to be going straight to voicemail.
A records check located Ethan Cahill’s vehicle parked on Driftwood Lane, approximately two streets from the Cahill residence. Officers made contact at a nearby address after a resident flagged down the patrol unit, stating she recognized the vehicle description from a neighborhood alert.
Ethan Cahill was located inside the residence of Margaret Voss, 81, a longtime Pelican Crest resident living alone. Voss confirmed Cahill had been staying at her home for several days, assisting with meals, medication reminders, and general upkeep following a recent fall. Voss stated she asked Cahill not to inform his family or contact any agencies, expressing concern that doing so would result in her being “looked at” or losing her independence.
Cahill stated he agreed to Voss’s request out of respect for her wishes and had not anticipated his mother would file a report. He appeared visibly distressed at the possibility that his absence had caused concern, and immediately contacted his mother from the scene.
No criminal activity was observed or alleged. Voss was advised of available community resources for in-home assistance, which she accepted information on but did not request further action regarding. Cahill and his mother resolved the matter directly by phone while officers was present.
